"Still a soldier even after discharge?" ... The defense ministry pulls out a new card, reserve forces 'taken aback' Kim Min-gyu Reporter Published 2026.03.02 12:27 β‘ 0 Comments + Subscribe < Share
Defense Ministry's military's first full-time reserve battalion established Maintains permanent organization, compensation up to 150,000 won per day Attention on future full expansion of Army The Republic of Korea Army, adapting to the trend of continuously declining soldiers, has established the military's first full-time reserve battalion at the 73rd Division located in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, and has begun pilot operations.

Yesterday there was a death during the 73rd Division training, here's a summary. Different battalion but same division / same Ssangyong training / since the terrain reconnaissance looked pretty similar, I'm writing this. (Previous day was entrance ceremony / auditorium training, tent setup and sleeping in tents) (Day death occurred) 6 AM wake up - outdoor roll call followed by morning training. Morning training is probably rough but our unit moved to the assembly point and climbed a steep mountain (not a hiking trail) with insanely steep slopes. In blazing sun wearing gear + assault pack + carrying rifle + wearing body armor, we kept climbing. (If you take off the body armor, majors and lieutenant colonels come and throw a fit and leave) Terrain reconnaissance / defensive against opposing forces? Because of that we kept going up and down moving between mountains repeatedly. From this point on I was like "what the hell is this, are we catching one person?" It was by squad movement and even our squad had it rough so we kept having stragglers. Even if they gave us short breaks, what's the point of squatting or standing in blazing sun? Evening they gave us combat rations and kept training until 9 PM while moving. And originally it wasn't supposed to end at 9 PM but 11 PM ~ past midnight until the 73rd Division commander ended the situation, so this fucked Ssangyong training had no sign of ending, but it suddenly ended at 9 PM. According to the news, it seems they ended it because someone collapsed and an emergency was called. To begin with, waking up at 6 AM and filling morning training to the brim and filling evening training to do terrain reconnaissance and roll people around is fucking γ γ γ γ γ γ Is this reserve forces? It happened yesterday but until I saw the news today, nobody knew about the death, they didn't tell us, and even now only people who saw the news or know know. Really so disgusting military, shitty country γ γ

Since a major incident involving a reserve soldier's death happened at that division, there's no way that plan won't take a hit

You're telling me pushing people's bodies to the limit when they're not ready won't cause accidents? Are these guys crazy? Tell people to run marathons starting at dawn tomorrow and their knees will explodeβthey'll literally die.
Honestly, do we even need to gear up soldiers like that in modern warfare?? Feels like it's just to protect the brass's positions and squeeze the younger generation dry
Realistically though, no matter how modern things get, war is still fought by people, and given that our country is mountainous with lots of potential battlefields, it's gonna be rough. Plus those mountains aren't exactly easy to drive vehicles through.
? Go watch the Russia-Ukraine war lolβdrones flying around and whatever, but everyone's still sitting in trenches with their heads down
If the Russia-Ukraine war happened in a mountainous region like Afghanistan, soldiers would be hiking up mountains, building trenches on the peaks, and sitting in them with their heads down ..... any war ends up requiring infantry to capture positions ...
That's legit the dumbest comment I've seen all year
this is why you don't cut corners with military planning. sad situation all around honestly
heartbreaking that it took a tragedy to expose this mess. accountability when??? π€
Man... how did that person end up like this γ
It's already messed up dying in the military, but dying in reserve duty after discharge? That doesn't make sense. They should only push people if they actually push them.
Isn't this an even bigger problem than the soldier issue? This really needs to go all the way up the chain. That division commander should go to prison
Murderers
The worst part about the military is when these crazy bastards spouting off about military spirit cause accidents like this and then feel zero guilt toward the victimβyou can clearly see them cooking up ways to dodge blame and shift responsibility instead
Thought the talk of pulling rank ended with the Imperial Japanese Army
The 73rd Division starting its first-ever full reserve unit this year..? It's on the news;;;
The 73rd is a mobilization division under a one-star general. Usually the two-stars send their one-stars there to feel what it's like in the chair, but did this one-star throw a tantrum wanting to make two-star?
Isn't this basically the state committing torture to death on civilians?
lmaooo 'getting destroyed' is such an understatement, this sounds like a full governmental meltdown π
wait this is actually wild, governments always have some sketchy plan nobody knows about until something goes wrong π
RIP to that soldier, but also yikes... if one death is enough to topple a whole ministry strategy, maybe it wasn't that solid to begin with?
genuinely curious what the plan even was... governments are always cooking up something sketchy
nah because when ONE incident takes down your entire defense strategy that says everything doesn't it
