Is "뭐노?" Actually a Dialect?

Is "뭐노?" a dialect or what? The original post discusses whether the phrase "뭐노?" (a cynical/dismissive "What?" or "Why?") is an authentic Gyeongsang dialect or if it originated from internet culture—specifically from the controversial website Ilbe. The author seems to argue it's being overused and conflated with regional speech when it's actually internet slang.

I've lived in Daegu for over 30 years and I get where you're coming from, but your argument is too one-dimensional to convince anyone—there's way more to explain. That's why the comment section's turned into a mess. Honestly, people who just throw random dialect into everything and use Ilbe slang? I just see them as bugs and ignore them. Those bugs are gonna be bugs their whole lives anyway.

lmao as someone learning korean this explains why my tutor keeps correcting me, she's from seoul and i learned from a busan streamer

🐿️

That's true though.

I'm a 33-year native of Gyeongnam and honestly, every area in Gyeongsang is different so you can't generalize, but I've fr fr never actually heard '뭐노?' used.

🐰

I don't really care about '뭐노?' but whenever someone uses it, it's like when that Starbucks boycott AI video drama happened a few days ago—people start getting all worked up and itchy to use it constantly lol

🐰

Honestly you can't say Ilbe had no influence fr fr That vocabulary wasn't around before Ilbe existed

Since when do we only use proper language online lol you're exhausting yourself

🐰

The nickname alone is reassuring.

I'm from Gyeongsang too but the internet corrupted me.

🐰

I used to think '뭐노?' meant you were an Ilbe user, but it does actually exist as dialect. I heard it when I went to the Uljin area.

🐰

That person's probably just an Uljin Ilbe user.

🐰

this is literally just like how english speakers don't realize their own accent exists... mind blown

A 70-year-old grandmother?
