If we just look at GDP ratio, France spends 30%, double ours, so France is the weird one. OECD ranks us 29th out of 38 countries in welfare spending, and the top countries are European welfare states—but we're not exactly rolling in money like Europe, right? Plus Europe's budgets are squeezed out while they free-ride on defense and can't even manufacture shells. And when you compare countries with high welfare spending ratios to countries with high national debt, you see it's basically just borrowing sprees.
