StoryRabbit.kr @ The Reason Why a 24-Year Employee Was Fired
instagram.com @ Burger King in Vancouver, Canada run by StoryRabbit. Wu Sharam worked at this location for 24 years. One day, she forgot her wallet at home and asked her manager, "Can I eat a fish set?" The manager only allowed her to have a sandwich, but she didn't know that and also ate fries and a drink. The store owner fired her on the spot. 24 years ended in an instant. Four years later, a trial was held again. "There was absolutely no intention to steal, and the price difference between the set and sandwich is only 500 won. It's a harsh punishment." Wu Sharam eventually received approximately 63 million won in compensation.

We had a case of a bus driver embezzling 800 won too, so it doesn't feel like someone else's problem γ γ
A 50-cent difference turned into 63 million won 4 years later..
Must've had a really bad relationship with the manager
Were they just waiting for a chance to fire him?
Wow this is exactly the same post and comments from before γ·
Foreign countries really do fire people over trivial stuff like that. Is that right?
They do fire people over small things, but if you get hit with wrongful termination like that for basically no reason, they get absolutely destroyed with compensation
If he got hit, they wouldn't have given him 63 million won in severance
Some people just silently build up frustration and then explode one dayβthat probably became the trigger
I don't get why our country fantasizes about American-style firing γ γ γ If you harass people or wrongfully fire them like in Korea, you get absolutely hammered with lawsuits and have to pay attorney fees too. Why do Korean business owners think America is a dream country? If you do boss tyranny like in Korea, you just get sued and hit with punitive damages and become a broke bastard.
Real talk γ γ Usually it's cases where the business shuts down and the whole team goes flying, not just firing individual employees without reason because they suck or you don't like themβthat's just as hard. If anything the fines would be higher γ γ γ
America has at-will employment which makes it ridiculously easy, but that's different from Canada. You work yesterday and get into a fight with your manager the next morning and get fired immediately in America. They can do mass layoffs or fire one or two people on a whim. Of course, if you can prove unfair reasons like workplace harassment or racial discrimination, that's different. But that's Canada. Why do some people only live in Korea and keep going on about America??
I think it's because in America or Canada you can fire people that way, so managers on the ground feel power by squeezing employees over trivial stuff. Judging from how often it shows up in movies and dramas, there must be a lot of people like that in real life
γ γ That scene in Wanted where the main character slams the keyboard while saying f u was really impressive.
This is why I never trust these big chains, they don't care about loyalty anymore. That man deserved so much better after 24 years of service.
'You got more severance from this. Congratulations. Good work.'
24 YEARS and they fire him over 50 cents?? That's absolutely insane, they should be ashamed of themselves honestly.
???: There was no other way to give him more severance...
Couldn't the manager have just handled it with discretion? Someone who worked that long to build up seniority would have a relationship where the manager could've easily just let it slide
lmaooo imagine working at the same place for nearly two decades and they do you dirty like that π corporate greed is wild
